Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913- October 24, 2005) was an African-American civil rights activist who became known for her role in the Montgomery bus boycott.

Early Life

  • February 4, 1913: Rosa Louise McCauley is born in Tuskegee, Alabama.
  • 1924: Rosa's family moves to Montgomery, Alabama.
  • 1932: Rosa graduates from high school and gets married to Raymond Parks.
  • 1943: Rosa begins working as a seamstress at a Montgomery department store.

Montgomery Bus Boycott

  • December 5, 1955:: Rosa Parks is arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott: The arrest of Rosa Parks sparks the Montgomery bus boycott, which lasts for 381 days.
  • November 13, 1956: The Supreme Court rules that bus segregation is unconstitutional.

Later Life

  • 1957: Rosa Parks publishes her autobiography, Rosa Parks: My Story.
  • 1965: Rosa Parks receives the Presidential Medal of Honor.
  • 1999: Rosa Parks is awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
  • October 24, 2005: Rosa Parks dies at the age of 92.
