Ellen Ochoa is a Mexican-American astronaut, engineer, and former director of the Johnson Space Center. She was the first Hispanic woman to go into space, and she has logged over 1,000 hours in space. Ochoa has also served on the National Science Board and the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Ochoa's journey to space began in El Paso, Texas, where she was born in 1958. She was always fascinated by science and math, and she excelled in school. After graduating from high school, Ochoa attended Stanford University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in electrical engineering. She then went on to earn a doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford in 1985.

After completing her education, Ochoa worked as a research engineer at Sandia National Laboratories. In 1990, she was selected by NASA to be an astronaut candidate. She completed her astronaut training in 1991, and she went on to fly on four space shuttle missions. Ochoa's first spaceflight was in 1993, and she became the first Hispanic woman to go into space. She also served as the mission commander on the STS-110 mission in 2002, which was the first space shuttle mission to the International Space Station.

Ochoa retired from NASA in 2007, and she went on to become the director of the Johnson Space Center. She served in this role until 2013, and she was responsible for overseeing the development and operation of the International Space Station. Ochoa is currently a professor at Stanford University, and she continues to work to promote STEM education.
